If you’re planning to study in the United Kingdom, staying informed about UK student visa updates is essential. The UK remains a top destination for international students, offering world-class education, a vibrant culture, and valuable post-study work opportunities. However, recent UK student visa updates announced in the 2025 Immigration White Paper will impact both current and future students.
Student Visa Maintenance Requirement Is Increasing (Effective November 11, 2025)
One of the most important UK student visa updates is the rise in financial maintenance requirements. Starting November 11, 2025, international students applying for a Student visa must show:
- £1,529/month if studying in London
- £1,171/month if studying outside London
This increase reflects the rising cost of living and replaces the previous thresholds of £1,483 and £1,136, respectively. While current students don’t need to meet the new requirement, they should still prepare for higher living expenses.
Tip: Check your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) form to confirm your financial zone.
Graduate Route Duration Is Changing (Effective January 1, 2027)
Another major UK student visa update affects the Graduate Route. Currently, international graduates can stay and work in the UK for:
- Up to 2 years for bachelor’s and master’s degrees
- Up to 3 years for doctoral degrees
From January 1, 2027, the Graduate Route will be shortened to 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s graduates. Doctoral graduates will still be eligible for the full 3 years. This change will affect students graduating in 2027 and beyond.
Why the UK Remains a Top Study Destination
Despite these UK student visa updates, the UK continues to offer:
- Globally respected degrees and institutions
- A thriving research ecosystem (12% of the world’s most-cited research in 2022)
- Entrepreneurial pathways like the Innovator Founder visa for graduates launching scalable startups
The UK also offers flexibility through the Graduate Route, allowing visa holders to work, be self-employed, travel, and volunteer.
